Dr. Sung Jin Park is a globally acclaimed and revered soprano whose breathtaking vocal artistry has captivated audiences worldwide. Known for her clear and bright voice, wide ranging repertoire, and captivating performance, her unparalleled talent and dedication to the art of singing have earned her numerous accolades and widespread recognition as a must-see performer of our time. Her performances have been characterized by a rare combination of technical brilliance, emotional depth, and a captivating stage presence that leaves audiences spellbound.
Dr. Park is a winner of the Barry Alexander International Vocal Competition, Southern Illinois Young Artist Organization Vocal Competition. She is also the recipient of the Josephine L. LiPuma Scholarship from CASA Italian Competition, the Bella Voce Award from Bel Canto Competition, and the Verdell Frazier Young Award from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In recognition of her talent and dedication for the arts, she further received a Certificate of Commendation from County of Bergen, New Jersey, 2019.
Since obtaining her doctorate from the University of Illinois in 2013, Dr. Park has actively sought opportunities to broaden her repertoire. She has been invited to and successfully performed in wide range of opera roles, such as Violetta in multiple productions of La Traviata, as Adele in Die Fledermaus, and as Mimi in La Bohème. She was recognized for her mesmerizing performances as Adina from L’elisir d’amore and Giulietta from I Capuleti e I Montecchi (Opera Concertate version). Her entrepreneurial endeavors include performing as the titular role in the world premiere of Opera Bari, an original opera piece with the Seoul Metropolitan Opera, in which Dr. Park worked together with a team of talented musicians to create the vocal performance, acting, and choreography for the original opera.
Beyond her illustrious career and talent in opera, Dr. Park has emerged as an extraordinary concert artist, captivating audiences in recitals and concerts with her stunning vocal range and interpretative brilliance. She performed as a soloist with Pacific Symphony Orchestra & Gangnam Symphony Orchestra. Her performances in concert halls and prestigious venues have been praised for their sheer emotive power and her ability to connect deeply with audiences in intimate settings.
Leveraging her academic background Dr. Park’s recitals invite audiences to enjoy new and exciting contemporary pieces, leading to fully attended recitals. She works with wide-ranging contemporary composers and researches their work, and further presents her interpretation of these pieces before her captivated audience. Since 2014, Dr. Park has been a critical member of the classical music research group, the Vocal Music Symposium (previous Women in Music), and collaborated with fellow academics and performers to further classical music research.
In addition to her performance and teaching career, she has a passion for entrepreneurial approaches of developing audience-friendly performances. In 2020, she has won funding from the Seoul Mayor Office to produce and perform a recital as part of the city’s post-COVID revitalization efforts. And in 2018, she was awarded a grant from the Seoul Cultural Foundation to stage a performance aimed at developing audience-friendly classical music performances. From 2014 to 2016 she received funding from the Korean Research Foundation for popularizing performance of music in the humanities.
Dr. Park is active in academia, teaching numerous subject matters to students from a wide range of backgrounds. She teaches in-depth performance classes to both vocal performance majors and non-majors, such as interpretation of contemporary art songs, applied voice lessons, English diction, and the vocal structure for singers. In addition, she teaches practical career development classes directed to preparing students for a wide range of career options in music. This includes teaching classes as a component of a collaboration with the Korean Ministry of Education, dubbed the National Competency Standards. She has won several accolades and recognitions during my years of teaching, winning numerous top reviews from her students for the excellent content and dedication of her teaching. Dr. Park is also committed to fostering the next generation of musicians and frequently engages in educational initiatives, workshops, and mentorship programs, imparting her expertise and passion for the art form to aspiring artists
Dr. Park holds a bachelor’s degree in vocal performance from Seoul National University, a master’s degree in vocal performance from Binghamton University, SUNY, and a doctoral degree in Voice from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She was the recipient of a full scholarship at UIUC. She studied under Cynthia Haymon-Coleman, Timothy LeFebvre, Mi Hae Park. Throughout her extensive training, she had the privilege of working with Dennis Helmrich, Diane Richardson, Chai-Kyou Mallinson, Ho Jeong Jeong.
